De Cellekens in Mechelen

This is the winner of a Diploma.

The restoration of an old courtyard building (1850) in the very centre of Mechelen, which used to be a hospice sheltering poor, single women. When it was acquired in 1992, the property was in a state of ruin having been totally abandoned for fifteen years.

De Cellekens, Mechelen BELGIUM

A beautiful ensemble of three wings in a U-shape has now been created. The north wing is a double residence with two traves under a hipped roof, while the east and west wings have been divided into small houses. With limited financial means and with the creative and active involvement of the owner, the restoration was finally completed after eight years of hard work.

“For the private initiative leading to the careful and sensitive restoration of a courtyard complex, and the creation of its central garden”
