Monastery of Nuestra Señora de Rueda in Sástago

This is the winner of a Diploma.

The restoration of a Cistercian monastery of Gothic style from the 13th century with enlargements from the 16th and 17th centuries, and opening it to the public for cultural tourism.

The Monastery of Nuestra Señora de Rueda, Sástago SPAIN

Despite its very poor shape, it is one of the most complete monasteries in Europe, since its poor maintenance meant no damaging new interventions. The stone and roof structures were restored, as were the medieval hydraulic infrastructures. The gardens and open spaces were also renewed. Archaeological searches were carried out throughout prior to restoration actions and some were left exposed below ‘windows’ in the floor. The return of this exceptional monument to its former splendour now allows the public to appreciate this jewel of monastic architecture.

“For the significant and most respectful restoration of one of the finest examples of cistercian monastic architecture, which brought this badly damaged monument back to life.”
