Förderverein Naturpark Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide, Karow

This is the winner of a Medal.

Following the fall of the Berlin wall and prior to unification, this German civic movement of public and private partners consolidated a state hunting ground and other adjacent landscapes in the novel legal status of a Nature Park. The nominated association of friends and sponsors of the Park has worked to bring to life a 365 square km of protected landscape and nature preserve.

Activities based in the Nature Park include environmental education, landscape protection and scientific research, thoughtfully balanced with the promotion of tourism and a cultural dimension. The guiding concepts are for the park to be a special space for experiencing nature as well as a culturally valuable landscape where a rural area has been protected from threats of depopulation and spatial planning laws, and their long-term social costs.
