The Heathland Centre in Lygra
This is the winner of a Prize.
Along the coastline of Western Europe, treeless heathland is the man-made cultural landscape bordering the Atlantic Ocean, binding the countries together. The creation of a Centre in Western Norway allows for the management of 1.7 km square heathland coastal cultural landscape, which has been restored and opened to the public.
The aim of the project was to maintain an authentic coastal heathland with all its elements. Traditional breeds of farm animals and farming techniques, traditional stone and wood buildings and archaeological sites have all been conserved. The Centre provides facilities for research and education and the heathland area is managed as a living cultural landscape and integrated with the running of five local farms.
