Heritage of the Riotinto Mining District in Huelva
This is the winner of a Diploma.
The project was created to preserve and highlight the mining heritage of the area and use it as a cultural tourist product. The Mining Park has become a landmark dedicated to one of the most important economic activities in the Iberian Peninsula’s history.
An old English hospital has been rehabilitated into a museum and history centre, a workers neighbourhood has been restored and an old mining railway now can bring visitors to the biggest open cast mine in Europe. The project is bringing a positive light to a depressed area. A nearby Roman necropolis is included in the park, which is accessible to visitors.
“For the important initiative taken to comprehensively develop a former and convert it into a heritage tourist park.”
