Valéria Suruceanu has been museologist and conservator at the National Museum of Art in Chisinau since 1990, responsible for the sculpture and decorative arts collections. After the independence of Moldova in 1991, she safeguarded the museum’s collections, mainly assembled in the second half of the 20th century, when Moldova was part of the Soviet Union.

Facing many difficulties, she analysed and categorised the collections and set up a documentation system, resulting in an inventory of 20th century Moldavian sculpture at the National Museum. Numerous exhibitions were organised, showcasing the importance of the museum’s collections.

“The work of Valéria Suruceanu is appreciated for its persistence in saving and conserving an important collection of sculpture and decorative arts under difficult cultural, political and financial circumstances.”
